It was erected in the second half of the 19th century after the end of the Caucasian War. The cathedral was named in honor of Tsarevich Mikhail – the son of Nicholas I and the governor of the emperor in the Caucasus. The construction was delayed due to the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish war. As a result, the temple was consecrated only in 1891.
