Description

The monument of architecture of Mariupol, Drama Theater was built and opened in 1960. In fact, the history of the theater in Mariupol begins much earlier, back in 1847, when the first professional theater troupe of Vinogradov arrived in the city. The building of the drama theater has all the features of Soviet classicism and a lot of stucco decorative elements. The main facade of the building is decorated with four columns and a gable with a thematic sculptural group, the main images of which are the images of metallurgists and farmers, as a sign of respect for the main local crafts. The theater building is also notable for the fact that it was built on the foundation of an older and more magnificent construction – the Temple of St. Mary Magdalene, which in the late XIX – early XX century was the second largest building in the city.During the construction of the Drama Theater building, the square in front of it was decorated with a large monumental arch. However, as soon as the theater was built, the arch was demolished.
