Georgy Ruslanovich Gongadze was a Ukrainian journalist of Georgian origin, founder and first editor-in-chief of the Internet publication Ukrainskaya Pravda.nThe circumstances of his death in 2000 became a national drama and a reason for protests against President Leonid Kuchma.nOn August 23, 2005, President Viktor Yushchenko posthumously awarded Gongadze the title of Hero of Ukraine. The inscription at the foot of the monument reads: “To Georgi Gongadze and to the journalists who died for the freedom of speech.”
