Ernst Neizvestny conceived the sculptural composition “The Golden Child” on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the city of Odessa. Back in 1944, the sculptor fighter of the Red Army visited shortly before the liberated Odessa. He was struck by the devastation in the city, but the strength of the unbroken spirit of the Odessans, who had passed through two and a half years of occupation. This contrast is remembered by the future sculptor. The composition conceived fell out of the author’s traditional style – tragic, intense and dynamic. The child’s sculpture is tender, soft, rounded, but at the same time it already feels the strength of the future giant.
