It was opened on November 14, 1980 and offers an area of 60 stores on 9000 m². The customer and owner was Allianz Lebensversicherungs-AG, who sold this property to the U.S.-American CBRE Group in August 2018. The complex of buildings also includes a hotel, offices, apartments and a garage, and its total area is 45,000 m².nThe quarter is considered an important example of postmodernism. The architecture is based on the brick tradition of Hamburg and, unlike other modern shopping centers, on classic business and arcade buildings, such as the Mellin passage in the Alster arcades. The Hanseatic Quarter has been on the list of buildings since January 2018. There were demolition plans for the area, causing a public outcry
