Description

This majestic temple was a pearl in the constellation of Mariupol Orthodox churches. On the maps of the city, it was designated as a cathedral (that is, the main temple). According to the old tribute, during the relocation of the Greeks in 1778-1779, they made a vow to build a church and dedicate it to Saint Harlampy, as a healer for general diseases. Majestic, in the Byzantine style, the three-altar church was built in 1845. The main altar was consecrated in the name of the martyr Kharlampy, the right altar in honor of the miraculous icon in the name of the Great Martyr and the Victorious George, and the left in the name of St. Nicholas. In the early 1890s, a new bell tower was erected, which was connected to the temple. This temple was the largest in the city, accommodating more than five thousand people. The icon of St. George was especially esteemed in the Harlampievsky Cathedral. In the “fatal” 1930s, the beautiful Kharlampievsky Cathedral was destroyed, like all other temples. A vivid reminder of the majestic temple today remains the stone of the Harlampievsky cathedral, left after the eruption of the temple and preserved by the inhabitants of the city.
