The bridge was opened on 9 September 1974 and spans the 325 m wide Köhlbrand. The cable-stayed bridge was designed by civil engineer Paul Boué and architect Egon Jux. According to a report in April 2018, the bridge could, according to alternative plans, be replaced by a double-storey tunnel, which on the lower level provides a lane for autonomously moving container transporters. Although a tunnel would be more expensive in construction than a new bridge, the maintenance costs would be much lower in the long term.
