The construction of the Grand Cascade was begun by decree of Peter I in 1715 and was carried out simultaneously with work on the Peterhof palaces. It makes up a beautiful architectural ensemble with the building of the Grand Palace in Peterhof, making the approach to it especially picturesque. 255 statues, bas-reliefs and sculptural elements are involved in the design of the fountain, and 75 water cannons shoot water jets several meters up. The underground part is formed by two grottoes – Upper and Lower; excursions are conducted to each of them.
