Lutheran Church of St. Catherine

Description

In Ukraine and Kiev in particular, the German colonists settled in the 2nd half of the XVIII century. The first settlers lived mainly on Podol. The first services for a small German community were sent to the home of Georg Bunge, the holder of the first city pharmacy. However, soon the community became crowded in a small house of an apothecary, and already during 1794-1795 a small wooden church was built on Spasskaya Street in honor of St. Catherine. This first church died in the fire of the Podolsk fire in 1811. June 25, 1812 was founded a new wooden church. Financial difficulties forced church leaders to sell their homes and build a church with these funds.nThe church was notable for outstanding acoustics, it had an organ presented by the merchant Cologne. Next to the temple was a Lutheran school. The street in honor of the inhabitants and the location of the temple was named Lutheran.
