The building was built in 1873 by the architect Pokutinsky in the historical style (neo-renaissance) as a suburban palace. The building is made of brick, plastered, two-story, F-shaped in plan, with a courtyard.nThe composition of the facade is restrained and spectacular.nThe building was rebuilt as an art gallery in 1914. The first canvases acquired were several works by Jan Mateiko, Death of Acerna and The Mean, Leopolsky and Vigzhivalsky’s Strike. nDuring the German occupation, 225 works of art were exported, among them Dürer’s unique collection of drawings.
