Description

The first town hall in Lviv appeared shortly after the city received the rights of self-government (Magdeburg Law in 1357). The building was wooden and soon burned down (1381). After the fire, the construction of a stone town hall began.nThe Town Hall is a witness of many historical events. In the Middle Ages, there was a pillar of punishment in front of it. In 1564, the Moldavian ruler Tomsha was executed here, and in 1578 Ivan Podkova, a leader of the Cossack rebellion, was executed.nOn the morning of November 2, 1848, during the revolutionary events in Lviv, the city center was fired upon by Austrian artillery and the town hall was badly damaged, its original tower collapsed. In 1851 the building was repaired.
