Mariinsky Gymnasium (Comprehensive School №1)

Description

The Mariinsky female gymnasium consisting of seven classes was founded in Mariupol in 1876. Soon, an additional (eighth) pedagogical class was opened, where home teachers and educators, teachers of urban and rural primary schools were trained. The pupils who successfully completed the pedagogical class could get not only school-leaving attestate but also the certificate that gave them a permission to do pedagogic in a private and a public sector. Before the First World War, pupils of the pedagogical class of the local gymnasium were able to work in the elementary schools of Mariupol. The modern comprehensive school №1 not only works in the building of the former women’s gymnasium, the school maintains its “genealogy” from this educational institution. There is a museum of the school’s history, which reflects the work of the gymnasium’s teaching class.
