It was built in 1909, five years after the opening of the bust of Alexander Pushkin, which is located at the opposite end of the public garden and made in the same style by the same sculptor – Edwards.nDuring World War II, a bullet hit Gogol’s bust, piercing his bust shoulder and hand. During the restoration of the square in the Square of Poetry in the summer of 2009, it was decided to leave the damage to the monument intact – for history.
