In the composition of the monument was a sculpture of a fighter with a machine gun and a machine-gun belt, the whole monument was bound with copper. Around the end of 1999, unidentified persons committed an act of vandalism: the copper was torn off, the image of the machine gun disappeared, and the structure of the monument was broken. In September, the molds were made on it, and the sculptor Klim Stepanov, the son of the deceased author of the composition, made a new sculpture from a more durable material. Dismantling of the old monument took place on January 17th. In the future, the Shevchenko Park management intends to landscaping the surrounding area, as well as to replace the plates with the names of Odessa citizens who died in Afghanistan, with granite ones.
