The museum was opened in 1990 and has over 1000 icons of the 16th – 19th centuries. It is located at the eastern end of the Museum Embankment in the Baroque building, where the headquarters of the Teutonic Order was previously located. The permanent director of the museum is Richard Zakharuk, and the founder is the Frankfurt physician Jorgen Schmidt-Vogt, who has been replenishing his collection of icons for decades during trips to the USSR. The main collection of the museum is made up of Russian Orthodox icons. It hosts exhibitions of the State Historical Museum, other museums and private collectors
