Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is the central square of the Spanish capital, one of Madrid’s most famous attractions. In ancient times, one of the entrances in the wall surrounding Madrid was located on this site. Medieval cities usually had one central square, but along the city walls left some free space for defensive maneuver. On such a space near the “Gate of the Sun” over time, an area formed that resembles an ordinary wide street.
