Description

The Ambrosian basilica was built at the burial site of early Christian martyrs. The modern building was built in 1080–1128. In the basilica are the relics of St. Ambrose of Milan, the founder of the first basilica at this place, and the relics of the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius, found by Ambrose. The basilica also houses the sarcophagus of Stilicho with biblical scenes carved on it, dating back to the 4th century. In addition, the remains of Emperor Louis II are buried in the basilica.nThe original basilica at this place was built by order of St. Ambrose of Milan between 379–386 years.nAt the end of the southern nave of the basilica is the chapel of San Vittore (Saint Victor), built in the cemetery of Christian martyrs above the grave of martyr Victor Mavr in the first half of the 4th century. The dome and walls of the chapel are covered in the Golden Sky mosaic, most probably made around the year 470.
