Created in 1949, by combining the Gallery of paintings of Taras Shevchenko in Kharkov and the Central State Museum of Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv. nIn 1940, the Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR decided to organize in Kyiv on the basis of the Republican jubilee exhibition the Central State Museum of Taras Shevchenko, concentrating here all the original materials related to the life and work of Taras Shevchenko. It was collected about 10,000 exhibits.nThe activity of the museum was terminated with the beginning of the war. Only valuable exhibits managed to be evacuated to Novosibirsk before the German occupation (returned to Ukraine in 1944).
