Description

In 1863, the oldest park in Mariupol, now called the City Garden, was laid out in the armored wedge of Klinova Gulch. At first it was a chaotic planting of territory with fruit trees, but everything changed with the return of outstanding Mariupol citizen Georgy Psalti to the city, who completed gardening and plant growing studing in France. It was he who initiated the landscaping of Mariupol and turned the City Garden into a real bourgeois park with cozy avenues and sculptures, various types of trees and summer theatre. Later in the heart of the park was erected a large fountain, which according to some reports supplied with water from the Water Tower. As for the park stage, then there were rumors that under its floor has been specially scattered broken glass that yielded such an incredible acoustics.nSince the foundation of the park, three mulberry trees were planted in it. Two of them have not survived to our days, and the third – the same age as the old park of Mariupol, which has already crossed the 150th anniversary – is still growing on its far alley.
