The sculptor Ivan Barannikov create the model of the monument. Foe the basis of his work, he took the famous photograph of Arkhip Ivanovich dated 1907. On that photo the artist appears intently looking into the distance with a fur coat over his shoulders. This model is stored in the funds of the Mariupol Museum of local lore. In addition, in that time it was necessary to obtain permission from Moscow.Mariupol could remain without a monument of the great artist, if there wasn`t talented sculptor, Vasily Petrovich Polonik. Since June 1993, the Greek Square has been decorated with a monument of our great countryman, the genius of landscape painting, Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi. It is a column of gray granite with Kuindzhi bust.
