Description

The church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti, often called merely the Trinità dei Monti, is a Roman Catholic late Renaissance titular church. It is best known for its commanding position above the Spanish Steps which lead down to the Piazza di Spagna. The church and its surrounding area (including the Villa Medici) are the responsibility of the French State. The construction of the church began in 1502 by order and with the funds of Louis XII, King of France, and continued until 1585. In 1816 the church was seriously damaged, after which it was thoroughly rebuilt. In the church is a masterpiece of Daniele da Volterra “The Descent from the Cross.”
