The overall design of the sign refers to the style of googie, popular in the southwestern United States in the 1940s – 1960s. In May 1959, the sign was installed on the place where it is today. On May 1, 2009, the mark was added to the National Register of Historic Places. On May 14 of the same year, the 50th anniversary of the sign was celebrated. Leading the ceremony were Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and fashion model Holly Madison. The highlight of the program was a massive (more than 300 specially selected girls) bikini parade, which fell into the pages of the Guinness Book of Records, “pool parties” and the fashion show of swimsuits from the 1950s to the present.
