One of the two stations in the Spanish capital – along with Chamartin Station. Trains departing from Atocha and Chamartin stations run on high-speed AVE lines, high-speed and regular Alvia lines.nThe station received its name on February 9, 1851 in honor of the demolished gates of Atoch. Translated from Spanish, this word means Spanish gorse, a stunted shrub with small yellow flowers.nTrains and trains depart from Atocha station platforms to the south, east and west of the country, primarily connecting the population of provincial cities such as Toledo, Cuenca, Aranjuez, Alcalá de Henares, Guadalajara, Avila, Escorial, Segovia and others with Madrid. It includes the Puerta de Atocha station, from where high-speed AVE trains depart to Barcelona, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, Cadiz and many other cities.nAtocha is a major transport hub (high-speed trains, commuter trains, metro and buses).nOn March 11, 2004, Atocha Station received notoriety in connection with a series of terrorist acts that resulted in major casualties. In the center of the modern station is a winter garden with palm trees and other tropical plants and a reservoir with a large colony of turtles.
