Not a single zoo in the world has such a number of animal species (approximately 15,000 animals, 1,500 species). Together with the adjoining aquarium, on three floors of which are represented not only fish, but also reptiles, amphibians, insects and invertebrates, the Berlin Zoo is one of the main attractions of Berlin. The Berlin Zoo, the first zoo in Germany and ninth in the world, opened on August 1, 1844. During World War II, most of the zoo was destroyed. Of the 3,715 animals, only 91 survived. After the reunification of Germany, unification began with the Tierpark Zoo in East Berlin, which is considered the largest landscape zoo in Europe.
