Frederick Street

Friedrichstrasse – the famous street in the center of Berlin, passes through the territory of the Mitte and Kreuzberg districts. The street got its name in honor of the Elector of Brandenburg, Friedrich III, who later became king of Prussia Friedrich I. The Friedrichstraße was badly damaged during World War II and only partly rebuilt during the division of Berlin. The section in West Berlin was partly rebuilt as a residential street.nIn the last years of the GDR’s existence, the construction of large shopping centers began on the section from Leipzig Street to Unter den Linden.nThe southern part of Friedrichstraße at the Mehringplatz and the Gallic Gate, where the pedestrian zone with various shops is located, is less well known.
