(mostly Italian).nThe gallery occupies the Royal Villa of the turn of the XVIII and XIX centuries. The gallery presents an extensive collection of Lombard painting of the XIX century.nOrganized in 1921 with donations from Lombard patrons of art.nThe gallery began with the collection of the Marquises of Fogliani, which was left in the inheritance of the city in 1868. Later, the museum collection was replenished by the wills and gifts of rich collectors. In the 1950s part of the collections was transferred to the Pavilion of modern art built next to the villa.nIn 2010, part of the exhibition devoted to the art of the 20th century was allocated to a special Museum of the 20th century, which occupied the town hall building on the Cathedral Square of Milan.
