According to Max Vasmer and Sobolevsky, the ancient Russian proper name Khoriv is derived from the name of the Khorevitsa locality – the mountains near Kiev. The name “Horivitsa” is identical to the ancient Persian Haraiva (the name of a mountainous area) and, apparently, comes from some Iranian language. The name is probably derived from the Greek “chorion” (fortification, fortress). According to another version, from the Sanskrit “ghora” – the heavenly mountain. According to the monograph by the linguist Chaplenko, published in 1970 in Munich, “Horevitsa” is preserved in the Slavic tracing paper as “Black Mountain”. Burning fortifications on the mountain could make it “Black”, and later, when the coals were covered with earth – “Bald”.
