Description

Bridge over the Spree in the center of Berlin. It bears the name of the German Communist politician Karl Liebknecht.nOn both sides, the middle arch of the bridge was decorated with curly allegorical images of war and peace, made in the workshop of Edward Lürsen. The obelisks of the bridge were decorated with bronze sculptures, and the pedestals were decorated with four bronze bear heads with a height of 1.75 m. In order for horse-drawn carriages on heavy wheels not to be disturbed by the inhabitants of the City Palace, the roadway was covered with wood.nThe modern bridge was built in the years 1949-1950 and became the fourth construction over the river at this place.nIn 1975, during the construction of the Palace of the Republic, on the site of the demolished City Palace, work was carried out to strengthen and level the surface of the bridge.nIn 1995-2000, the city funds were used for the restoration of the bridge without stopping the movement. Work on the restoration of the bridge was carried out. In 1997, bronze bear heads were installed on the piers of the bridge.
