Description

Mamucium or Mancunium – Roman fort in Castlefield in Manchester in the north-west of England. A Roman settlement founded in the year 79 in the Roman province of Britain was guarded by a cohort of Roman auxilaries and controlled two main roads passing through the area. Several large civilian settlements (Vicus), where soldiers’ families lived, traders and artisans, emerged outside the fort. Currently, this territory is protected by the state as a historical monument.nThe ruins of the fort remained intact until the rapid expansion of Manchester began during the industrial revolution at the end of the 18th century. At this time, most of the territory of the fort was leveled for the subsequent construction of the Rochdale Canal and the Great Northern Railway. The fort has now become part of the Castlefield Historical Park. Part of the walls of the fort with gates, warehouses, granaries and other outbuildings of the Vikus were reconstructed and open to the public.
