The monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, the king who in the 5th century stood at the head of Iberia, an ancient state on the territory of part of modern Georgia, is located near the Metekhi church, built in the 13th century. Such a neighborhood in the most picturesque place of Tbilisi is symbolic – it was here, on the left bank of the Kura River, that the king ordered the construction of monasteries and churches to strengthen the faith of the Georgian people in God. Vakhtang I Gorgasali is known as the founder of the city, also thanks to him Georgian statehood was born, since he became the unifier of local lands.
