Description

The sculptural group was made by the young French sculptor Auguste Caen and was acquired by someone from wealthy Odessa, who installed it at his country house somewhere on French Boulevard, where she “guarded” the main entrance. After the establishment of the Soviet government in Odessa, the dacha, and with it the sculptural group, were nationalized. In the mid-1920s, the city architects Wěmeck and Bezchastnov proposed to the city authorities to decorate the city squares and parks with sculptures confiscated from representatives of the former trade and aristocratic elite. So in the urban landscape appeared the sculptures “Cupid and Psyche” in the Palais Royal, a copy of the famous statue of Laocoon on Feldman Boulevard and others. The composition Lion and Lioness were installed in the City Garden in 1927.
