Description

This place had different names at different periods of its history: Alexander Square, Svobody Square, Central Square and, finally, Theater Square. It was laid as part of the construction of the Mary-Magdalene Church in 1897. This place is the work of Georgy Psalti, who, after studying in France, returned to Mariupol and began the process of planting the city with various kinds of trees, including Alexander Square. The fountain “The Seasons” was a large bowl with a central sculptural group of sculptures of two boys, and under the bowl were figures of four women who personified four seasons of the year. It is believed that at the beginning of the twentieth century this fountain was saturated with water from The Water Tower.Today Theater Square has changed its appearance once again, becoming more modern. However, as at the beginning of its history, it remains one of the most favorite destinations of residents and guests of the city.
