The collection returned to Berlin in 1996 with its owner, who had been in exile for sixty years. Berggruen has been collecting it for 30 years. As a “gesture of reconciliation,” collector and art dealer Heinz Berggruen handed it to his hometown at a price significantly lower than its real value. The collection is famous primarily for the works of Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque, Paul Klee and Henri Matisse. The Berggruen Museum is part of the Berlin State Museums. Continuing the tradition of reconciliation of his father with Germany, the heirs of the collector announced on July 16, 2007 that 50 more works of the era of classical modernism were transferred to the Berggruen Museum.
