The Bronx Zoo is a zoo located in the Bronx Park of New York City, south of the New York Botanical Garden. It is the largest urban zoo in the United States, covering 1.07 km². The zoo was founded on November 8, 1899. At that time, it contained 843 animals, grouped by 22 exposures. Today, the zoo has more than 6,000 animals, representing about 650 species from around the world, forty of which are at different stages of extermination. In 1941, the zoo was the first in the United States to transfer animals from cages to open spaces imitating the natural environment. Every year, the zoo is visited by two million tourists.
