Description

The abbey of Santa Maria di Rovenano is a Cistercian monastery complex in Milan. The abbey was founded in 1135 and became one of the first examples of Gothic architecture in Italy, although it also shows some traces of the late Romanesque style. In the Renaissance, numerous artists and creators worked on the decoration of the abbey, in particular, works of Bernardo Luini belong to this period. In the 17th century, brothers Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Mauro della Rovere worked on the painting of the walls of the church – their frescoes have survived to the present day. Noteworthy is the main entrance dated by the beginning of the 16th century.
