In the spring of 1990, after the opening of the border between West and East Berlin in 1989, an artistic reflection of the political events that occurred in Germany in 1989–1990 appeared on the section of the Berlin Wall along Spree on Mühlenstrasse Street. 118 artists from 21 countries took part in the work on 106 paintings painted on the east side of the Berlin Wall. The gallery opened on September 28, 1990. Its length is 1316 meters, and thus the “East Side Gallery” is the longest open-air art gallery in the world with a permanent exhibition. Since 1991, the gallery has been under state protection as a historical monument.
