Description

The oldest of the four universities in Berlin. Founded on August 16, 1809 at the initiative of Wilhelm von Humboldt. In 1828, he received the name of the University of Friedrich Wilhelm in honor of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III, in whose reign was established; in 1949, renamed in honor of the Humboldt brothers.nThe university received the emptied palace of Prince Henry, built in 1748-1766. The building that has been repeatedly rebuilt since then is still the main building of the university.nClasses at the university began in 1810, at that time 256 students were enrolled.nIn the XIX century, the university was one of the largest European research centers.
