New Square

New Square is located in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. It was formed in 1358.nDespite its name, New Square is the oldest in Barcelona. Until the XIV century, on the site of the square there was an empty space outside the city gates of the Roman settlement Barsino. The Bishop’s gate towers have survived to this day.nUntil the 1940s, the square was typical of the square-shaped Middle Ages, but part of it suffered during the civil war.nAt the moment, the New Square has an irregular, triangular shape. In the XX century, the area became the object of archaeological excavations. Nowadays, on Novaya Ploshchad, the antiques market takes place every Thursday.
