Description

The church of St. Mark was first mentioned in 1254. It is believed that it received its name as a token of gratitude to the Republic of St. Mark, who in the 12th century rendered assistance to local residents in the struggle against Frederick Barbarossa. In the XIII century, the church was built by the Augustinian in the Gothic style. However, in the 17th century, additional baroque parts were added, which made the Church of St. Mark the largest religious building in the city after the Milan Cathedral.nIt is known that in the early 1770s, young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in a monastery at the church for several months. The church is also known that on May 22, 1874, on the first anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni, it was the first time that “Requiem” by Giuseppe Verdi sounded.nMany famous figures are buried in the church. The walls of the church are decorated with medieval frescoes.
