Bahamas – the home of good and friendly people!

 

Bahamas is an island country in the Atlantic ocean, which consists of the archipelago of more than 700 Islands, cays and islets. The population is around 332 634 people, including the following ethnic groups: blacks (90.6 percent); white (4.7 per cent); and mixed (black & white, 2.1 percent). English is the official language of the Bahamas, and Christianity is the predominant religion. More specifically, 69.9 per cent of Bahamians are Protestant Christians, and Catholics and other Christian denominations account for 12% and 13% of the population respectively.

Bahamian cuisine

 

Seafood such as fish, crabs and shellfish are an integral part of Bahamian cuisine. Other foods widely consumed throughout the country include rice, tropical fruits, potatoes, pork and peas. While onions, garlic, coconut, cinnamon, chili, lime – a common seasoning in Bahamian dishes. A large part of food consumed in the Bahamas, is also imported from other countries. Popular soups in the Bahamas include soup of peas, sauces (cooked with chicken, potatoes, pepper and lime), fish stews, clam chowder.

Shell is the national dish, which is a mollusk with firm white flesh that can be served raw with vegetables and lime juice, steamed, deep fried or steamed. Baked crab, grilled fish bones, boiled fish and grilled sea bass – additional seafood, chicken, pork and goat are the most popular meat dishes. On some remote Islands, iguanas are hunted and eaten. Braised corned beef and white rice form the popular Bahamian dish called “fire truck”. Grits, baked macaroni and cheese, potato salad and janicak – typical garnishes used in the Bahamas, and pies, bread pudding, rum cake and guava – popular desserts. ToKosova water and other fruit juices are common beverages.

Literature and art in the Bahamas

The Bahamas have a rich tradition of oral histories, including tales and legends, heroic stories that have been passed down from generation to generation, from mouth to mouth. Written literary works include poetry, historical records and novels. Bahamian storytelling is a very revered art, and these stories often contain witty messages.

Ordinary works of art created by Bahamian artists include landscapes, seascapes, and illustrations of historical events. To popular crafts include weaving of straw (which is used to make beautiful hats and baskets), wood carving and the art of coral and stone.
