La Guajira is power in bird watching for the Global Big Day
With 252 species recorded during the Global Big Day, La Guajira was ranked as the second department with more bird sightings on the Caribbean coast and eighth nationwide.
Colombia came in second place in the ranking, surpassed this year by Peru.
La Guajira is strengthened as a reference tourist site for this type of initiatives, as it houses 26 percent of the country’s bird diversity.
During the sighting last Saturday, birds that add to the National GBD list were recorded as the Cardinal Guajiro (Cardinalis phoeniceus), Turpial (Icterus icterus), Tumba Yeguas (Arremonops conirostris), among other shorebirds and migratory birds such as the Calidri bairdy.
The department has a range of species ranging from coastal and wetland birds to Andean birds, 25 of them with unique and almost endemic characteristics in Colombia.

“La Guajira did well. Year after year we are gaining ground in this competition. The intention is to continue managing resources to strengthen this activity in a pedagogical way, with minors and members of rural communities,” said Lenix Lázaro, director of the Ornithological foundation of La Guajira and departmental coordinator of the Global Big Day.
This year 20 localities were arranged, in which several communities, new reserves and children from different villages were linked.
In Riohacha, seven points were enabled: the Bañaderos Hill in the Los Gorros, Mouwa, Cotoprix and Pozo García sectors; the Ranchería River Delta, the Los Flamencos fauna and Flora Sanctuary and the Cari Indigenous community.

Webinar held
After this celebration, Cerrejón organized the webinar: ‘Birds of the Guajira and the importance of the wüin Manna Biological Corridor, for its conservation’, with the participation of several experts.
Juan Carlos Rodríguez, ecologist and member of the Colombian Association of Ornithology, highlighted finding populations of tinamúes and pajuiles, in areas near the mine.
“Species that make us understand that biodiversity is conserved and this is possible as part of the restoration and conservation processes that Cerrejón is carrying out in the Biological Corridor that connects the Serranía del Perijá and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta,” he said.
The conference was held jointly by Corpoguajira, University of La Guajira, government of La Guajira, mayor of Riohacha, Cerrejón, travel agencies, birdwatchers, Guardians of Environment and peace, National Police and Secretary of Tourism and Economic Development.
