The pedestrian square has a regular rectangular shape and is located in the historic quarter of Königstadt in the Mitte district. Berliners often call the square simply “Alex”.nFrom 1701, the square was officially called the “Royal Gate Square”. In honor of the visit to the Russian Emperor Alexander I in the fall of 1805 by the decree of the Prussian King Frederick William III, the square received its present name.nIn the postwar period, during the GDR, in 1966-1970. the square was built up with new buildings, and its size increased in the direction of the center of east Berlin. The architecture of the former GDR is reminiscent of a large rotating clock, thanks to which it is possible to determine the time in many countries of the world, and the fountain, which used to be called “Friendship of Peoples”.
