In front of the south coast of Mallorca there is an archipelago made up of just 20 islets that offer a unique and little crowded environment where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful jewels of the Mediterranean. Do you dare to find out?
Cabrera, main island of the archipelago of the same name.
Ten kilometers south of the cabo de las salinas de Mallorca, is the archipelago of Cabrera, a place that captivates everyone who knows it by its wild nature, the diversity of animal species, its fascinating history and its incredible beach. Made up of 19 islets, the archipelago of Cabrera is a true sustainable parasum, declared Martimo Terrestre National Park in 1991.
With more than 90,000 hectares of extension and located in Cabrera, the main island that gives its name to the archipelago, this national park houses an explosion of diversity both on the surface and in its incredible seabed. In l we find an enormous biological wealth, important colonies of seabirds, species and coastal landscapes that have remained virtually unchanged at the lake of history thanks to their conditions of conservation and isolation.
Throughout the years, the National Park has received prominent figures of protection, among which are the Special conservation area, Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean importance (ZEPIM) and Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA). Currently the Martimo de Cabrera National Park has become the National Laboratory against the climate change, thanks to the virtual Mar scientific project developed by the Instituto Espaol De Oceanografa (IEO).
Fortifications with Dream views
Located in the same national park and 72 meters above sea level, we find one of the historical icons of the island of Cabrera: its castle. The origins of this famous fortification date back to the year 1410 and from its tower we can see stunning views of the island of sa Conillera, the mouth of the port with the tip of sa Creueta and the Cape of Llebeig, the cove of Es Forn, s’espalmador and sa Platgeta.
Both those who seek to escape civilization in a desert beach like those who want to live adventures in one of the best preserved seabed of the Mediterranean, the island of Cabrera offers a multitude of activities for all tastes and audiences.
Enjoy a boat trip, make routes hiking or discover the underwater wealth with the practice of snail, are just some of the activities offered by this practically virgin land just ten kilometers from the Majorcan Coast. In the visitor center of Sant Jordi can be booked guided tours, underwater interpretation activities, itineraries in canoe…
Culture lovers can not miss the Ethnographic Museum Es Celler, located in the interior of the island of Cabrera, where various ethnological pieces related to the National Park are exhibited in addition to housing a small Botanical Garden.
Sustainability, pillar of the Balearic Islands
With the aim of promoting the sustainability, the Balearic institutions created in 2016 the Fund for the promotion of Sustainable Tourism, dedicated to the collection of income from the so-called Sustainable tourism tax (ITS) that charge the tourist accommodations of the four islands to their guests.
The collection of these funds is destined to different projects that help to alleviate the negative effects of Tourism, as is the case of the restoration project of the Cabrera Castle, started in 2020, the recovery of hbitats of the Martimo Terrestre National Park and the Environmental Sustainability Project of the Cabrera National Park.
Finally, it should be noted that, in order to protect one of the natural wonders of the Mediterranean, all visitors must request a special permission to be able to sail and dive through the incredible waters of the Natural Park of the island of Cabrera.
